Background
MYRADA was registered as a Society during 1968, with the specific objective of facilitating the rehabilitation of Tibetans who came to India as refugees in large numbers.By 1978 the communities had been assisted to build their livelihoods and institutionalise self-governance systems. At this time, MYRADA decided to reorganise itself to work with the rural poor in the southern states of India. The principle which guides MYRADA’s role is: “BUILDING POOR PEOPLE’S INSTITUTIONS, using three key elements of community participation, cost effectiveness and sustainability beyond the intervention period. This arose from the belief that the poor have a right to craft their own institutions which must be respected.
